What is a Wall Mount Rack?

Wall mount racks come in many different shapes and are generally used to store network equipment. They are mainly used not only to save space, but also to keep the hardware equipment safer, providing protection from dust or tampering. In its most basic form, a wall mount rack will be made of two or four vertical mounting rails made of aluminum or steel in order to support a large weight.

Why Should You Use a Wall Mount Rack?

Besides the fact of saving up a lot of space, a wall mount rack can also offer more protection for the hardware equipment. While some companies may require large data racks, many smaller ones only require a decent wall mount rack to store everything they need. 19- inch racks are the most commonly used and while they are the same in terms of with, their depth and height may differ significantly. Racks also come in enclosed forms, with side panels and a door that opens to have access to the hardware inside. And because it is out of the way they will not be accidentally hit and the door cannot be accessed by any random person.

What are the Types of Wall Mount Racks?

Depending on its usage, there are quite a few types of racks to choose from. A few examples include:

Open frame racks. They are the most basic and low-cost rack mount that can be used to store IT equipment such as servers and telecom equipment but they don’t offer much physical protection and can be accessed by anybody. They are designed in such a way that cable management is much easier.

Rack cabinets or rack enclosures feature side panels and removable doors. They are designed to withstand heavier equipment and at the same time, permit good airflow for hotter equipment. The doors themselves can be locked and, therefore providing security at a physical level. There are single and double section wall cabinets. The single section wall mounts are a great choice when storing servers, routers and other equipment. A downside to these wall cabinets is that cable management can be a bit restrictive.

In order for them to be mounted on the wall, they will come in smaller sizes than the ones placed on the floor. This is for obvious weight reasons. Mounting a large wall rack with heavy equipment may pose a great risk.

Final Thoughts

When making the final choice it is important to determine their exact use. If a wall mounting rack is what you need, it must be made sure that the wall, as well as the fasteners,  are able to support the entire weight. Also, if good airflow is what you need, consider enclosed wall mount racks as they come with additional features to ensure good air circulation within the closed space. A rack’s depth is also important as it will determine whether or the equipment will fit comfortably and as well as the cables that extend beyond it.
